Melkonkatu 4’s zoning amendment contributes to the densification of Vattuniemi’s urban fabric. The stepped seven-storey residential building, completed in 1973, is being raised by one additional floor. The new storey is carefully integrated into the existing architecture through its façade materials, massing and roof profile.
The amendment enables the construction of an approximately 750 m² extension. A green-roofed bicycle storage building will also be added to the yard. The number of parking spaces remains at 37, in line with the city’s parking guidelines. The project is estimated to increase the local population by roughly 20 residents.
The extension complements the previously renovated brick façade with a lighter aluminium cassette cladding. The solution refreshes the building’s appearance and supports the Vattuniemi planning principles, which emphasise infill development, a more coherent streetscape and the efficient use of the existing urban structure.
The project planning was carried out in close collaboration with the City of Helsinki’s zoning department. The zoning amendment was approved by the Urban Environment Committee on 4 March 2025.
