Asunto-Oy Helsingin Nelikulma, located at Sturenkatu 37–41, is a closed-block residential building representing 1920s classicism. The building was designed by architects Jussi and Toivo Paatela. The property is currently undergoing an extensive pipe and building services renovation, for which the architectural design is provided by Arkkitehtitoimisto Eero Korhonen Oy. The project is in the construction phase and is scheduled for completion in early 2026.
The renovation includes the refurbishment of water and sewer systems, wet rooms, kitchens, and WC facilities, as well as the replacement of risers and the main piping systems in the basement. At the same time, the original natural ventilation system is preserved to maintain the building’s historic character, while the exhaust flues and vents are upgraded to meet current standards.
The building is a representative example of Helsinki’s traditional inner-city apartment construction, where the closed block structure, arched gateways, and sheltered courtyard form an architecturally valuable urban ensemble. The renovation design is grounded in respecting the building’s original architectural appearance.
The architectural design has focused on preserving the original spatial proportions, meeting the requirements of contemporary refurbishment, discreetly integrating technical systems into existing spatial reserves, and ensuring clarity, longevity, and ease of maintenance in all solutions.
Upon completion, Sturenkatu 37–41 will continue its lifecycle with updated technical systems while retaining its original identity and architectural value within the urban streetscape.
